Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon Wear 2500 For Kids’ Smartwatches

It has been quite a while since Qualcomm launched a new chip for smartwatches, more than two years to be precise. The company has announced the launch of a new chip specifically for 4G kids’ watches at Mobile World Congress Shanghai called Snapdragon Wear 2500. The company is still going to launch another Snapdragon Wear chip for conventional smartwatches later this year as it has promised to do so.

Qualcomm is targeting the growing market for kids’ smartwatches with the Snapdragon Wear 2500. It has designed the chip for low power so that it provides up to 14 percent longer battery life across active and standby modes compared to previous chips.

The chip will power devices that enable children to keep in touch with their family, learn with access to rich multimedia content, and stay fit and active throughout the day. It has support for an up to 5MP camera, LTE, and location tracking so that parents can have peace of mind.

The Snapdragon Wear 2500 platform comes with an optimized version of Android for kids’ watches. It’s based on Android Oreo and can fit in a 512MB memory footprint. It’s designed to consume less power by switching off the capabilities not needed and adds features specific to kids’ watches.

Smartwatches powered by this chip will be out later this year. Huawei is one of the first companies working with Qualcomm to develop a kids’ watch based on the Snapdragon Wear 2500.
