It’s safe to say that Nintendo kind of kicked off this recent trend of relaunching older consoles as they have done with the NES and SNES Classics. This spurred other companies to do the same, such as Atari who announced the Atari VCS back in 2017. The good news is that if you liked what you saw, you’ll be pleased to learn that pre-orders are now live as promised.
Atari is currently taking pre-orders via Indiegogo which for those unfamiliar is a crowdfunding platform. It seems that Atari’s initial goal of raising $100,000 has since been surpassed ever since it launched and is now sitting at close to $2 million at this time of writing. With a month left in its campaign, it’s safe to say that there is a very good chance it will cross the $2 million mark and who knows, maybe even hit $3 million.
The console is priced at various price points, but for those who want everything which includes the console, the joystick, and the gamepad, it will set you back $319. There are options where you can buy the console by itself, or the joystick and gamepad separately, so it’s up to customers to decide.
Now we did say that the Atari VCS seems to be following in Nintendo’s footsteps of re-releasing classic consoles, but to be fair the Atari VCS is a brand new console (inspired by the Atari 2600) except that it will run classic Atari games that have been preloaded onto it. It will also feature some modern technology such as the ability to go online, use voice command, stream videos, and the best part is that the content on the console isn’t fixed.
This is because the Atari VCS was built on an open source Linux OS, which means that more software and features can be added in the future.
