GoPro Hero Is A New $199 Entry-Level Action Camera

GoPro’s business has had a tough couple of years even though it’s synonymous with really good action cameras. CEO Nick Woodman has previously said that the company will reset expectations this year and its new product is certainly the first step in that direction. GoPro today launched its promised entry-level action camera that’s simply called GoPro Hero. It costs $199.

While the GoPro Hero does look like other cameras in the lineup such as the Hero 6, it’s not as capable in the performance department, but that was obvious given that it costs $199.

The GoPro Hero can record at a maximum resolution of 1440p at 60 frames-per-second. The camera isn’t capable of shooting slow-motion footage or video in 4K resolution. It can also take 10 megapixel still photos and only offers one burst shooting mode which captures 10 frames-per-second. There’s also a one-time lapse setting for 0.5 seconds per shot.

The other major difference can be found under the hood as well. Instead of using the company’s GP1 custom image processor that’s found in the likes of the Hero 6 Black, it has a chip from Ambarella, which also supplies similar chips to other manufacturers of action cameras such as Xiaomi’s Yi.

Other features include a 2 inch touchscreen display, digital video stabilization, and voice control. The GoPro Hero is waterproof up to 30 feet and since it’s a GoPro action camera after all, it’s compatible with all of the existing mounts and accessories.

Head over to GoPro’s website right now if you’re interested in picking one up as the $199 GoPro Hero has gone on sale today.
