EU Proposes Law That Requires Tech Companies To Share Data From Foreign Servers

If you recall, there was some fuss made in the past about BlackBerry’s servers several years ago, where the company eventually caved to the demands of the Indian government and brought some of their servers to the country. The idea is that by hosting data locally, governments will have easier access to the data stored on them should the need arise.

This is also similar to what we’re seeing with Apple in China, but it seems that idea behind local servers could soon be moot because in a recently proposed law by the EU, it could be that tech companies could be forced to hand over data even if they are stored elsewhere. The EU isn’t alone in trying to get this to happen.

In the US there is an ongoing legal battle between Microsoft and US lawmakers, where the latter are trying to get Microsoft to turn over emails stored on their servers in Ireland in conjunction with a drug-trafficking investigation. Safe to say that should they successfully managed to achieve this, it could set a very important precedent for similar requests in the future.

However whether or not the EU’s proposed legislation will go through remains to be seen as it said that it could take up to two years before it can be finally agreed as to whether or not it should be implemented.
