Xiaomi Surge S2 Custom Chipset Reportedly In Development

While there are many smartphone vendors out there, it’s only a few who are capable of developing and using their own chips in their products. Samsung and Huawei are two such manufacturers. Xiaomi tried joining this exclusive club last year when it showcased its custom Surge S1 chipset but the project essentially fizzled out. Xiaomi is now said to be taking another shot at custom SoC development and it’s reportedly working with TSMC on the Surge S2 chipset.

It was also rumored earlier this year that Xiaomi is quietly developing its Surge S2 custom chipset which is going to be manufactured by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

According to a new report, Xiaomi’s latest custom chip is going to be based on TSMC’s 16nm process and that it’s going to have an octacore design with four 2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 and four Cortex-A53 cores. The chip may also be compatible with UFS 2.1 storage and LPDDR4 memory.

It’s said that Xiaomi wants to start using this chip in its mobile devices by the second half of this year. Whether or not the custom chip will be ready for public use by then remains to be seen, though. Xiaomi hasn’t really confirmed or denied anything as yet concerning the Surge 2.
