Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 II wraps big lens and big features into one big package

It was back in 2014 that we reviewed the first Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 - a capable all-in-one superzoom with a considered fast lens and lots to shout about. Since there's been the FZ2000, which has a slighly rangier lens.

Now, for 2019, there's the Panasonic FZ1000 Mark II. Yep, it's back in updated form, taking on the original FZ1000's format and, well, not changing much at all really.

That means the Mark II comes with the same 25-400mm f/2.8-4 equivalent lens. The same 1-inch sensor size, offering 20-megapixels of resolution. The same design, including optical image stabilisation, 12fps burst shooting, a built-in viewfinder, and vari-angle LCD screen.

So what is new? The FZ1000 II is all about bringing the range up to date. That means this superzoom adds Panasonic's 4K Photo mode. There's also 4K video capture at 24/25/30fps. It also adds Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity for on-the-go sharing to another device, ensuring ease of sharing.

There's that saying, "if it ain't broke, why fix it?", which seems to be Panasonic's angle with the FZ1000 II. It's got the design language down to form, the lens range and stabilisation is already proven, so adding some up-to-date features to bring it back to life is where the sequel succeeds. But if you don't mind about video and can find the original for a cut of the price then you might have found yourself a baragin.

The Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 II will be available from the end of March, priced £769.99.
