Back in 2018, at the last ever Photokina - a large camera show in Cologne, Germany - Panasonic chose to sign-off with a bang by introducing its first ever full-frame mirrorless cameras: the S1 and S1R.
What is the Lumix S1?
Embodying the same design and overall feature set, the two cameras differ by sensor resolution alone, the S1 offering 24.3-megapixels and the S1R offering 47.3-megapixels by comparison.
Both cameras utilise the Leica L mount - perhaps not a surprise as Leica has been releasing re-badged Panasonic Lumix compacts for many years - which means the S1 and S1R will accept Panasonic S Pro lenses; Leica SL, TL and CL lenses; and forthcoming Sigma lenses created as part of a lens alliance. Micro Four Thirds lenses will not fit, not even by an adapter, which keeps the Lumix G range wholly separate.
As unveiled at the Panasonic Imaging Seminar in Barcelona, Catalonia, on 1 February 2019, the S1 and S1R will also feature 6-stop sensor-based image stabilisation, feature autofocus capable to -6EV, while the viewfinder panel houses a class-leading 5.76m-dot resolution OLED panel, sat alongside a 3.2-inch tri-adjustable touchscreen.
Indeed, there are top-spec features aplenty - including video, which is catered for in 4K at up to 50/60fps - but it's the price point that people have really been wondering about.
How much will it cost?
The S1 will cost £2,199.99 body-only, the S1R will cost £3,399.99 body-only.
In addition there will be three Panasonic lenses available at launch: the S Pro 50mm f/1.4 (S-X50), priced £2,299.99; the S Pro 24-105mm f/4 Macro OIS (S-R24105), priced £1299.99; and the 70-200mm f/4 OIS (S-R70200), priced £1749.99.
Kit options with the 24-105mm lens will cost £2,999.99 for the S1 and £4,199.99 with the S1R.
All products will be released on 18 March 2019.
