China’s Huawei Is Now The Second Largest Smartphone Seller In The World

The world’s largest smartphone seller is Samsung, according to market research firm IDC. Samsung has managed to hold onto their position for a while now, but it seems that the competition is catching up because according to the IDC’s latest figures, Huawei is now the second largest smartphone seller in the world.

This is a big deal because prior to this, Apple was considered to be the second largest, but now it looks like Huawei has managed to dethrone them. The IDC’s report claims that in the second quarter of the year, Huawei managed to ship 54.2 million smartphones out of a total of 342 million units shipped worldwide.

The IDC also confirms that Huawei is the largest smartphone company in China with a market share of 27%, which is different from what Counterpoint’s data suggests where Huawei is said to account for 40% of the market. As for the competition, Samsung’s worldwide market share is at 20.9% where they shipped a whopping 71.5 million handsets in the previous quarter, however like we said, the competition is slowly catching up as this actually represents a 10.4% decline from the previous year.

That being said, both Samsung and Apple are set to release new flagship smartphones later this year, but whether or not those releases will be compelling enough against Huawei’s upcoming Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro remain to be seen.
